Emily Mortimer stepped out on the pink carpet for the premiere of the Pink Panther last night in this lovely Chloe dress and jacket. She paired gold metallic sandals with a gold clutch and topped off the look with a vintagey rhinestone choker and matching cuff. I love the look which is dressy and expressive, but clean and architectural.
Her Chloe ensemble brings me to something I've been thinking about today. A few months ago I read about big shoulders making a comeback as a trend in 09, but had shoulder pads in mind and immediately blocked it along with memories of Alexis Carrington's overly harsh silhouette's, and Bill Cosby's sweaters from the '80's.
But today I saw someone sporting the look on the street, so it must be making its way in. Instead of pads however, it's about cut, puffed and ruched shoulders, and it is in fact quite lovely. And heaven knows, fashion needs a big game changer right now to get people back into the stores in pursuit of new looks. Below are some of the big shoulders from the Chloe Spring 09 collection. Tell me, would you wear an abbreviated version of these looks?

Oof---I can definitely appreciate how cool this looks on models, but it is one trend that I will DEFINITELY not be participating in. I have really broad shoulders to begin with, and would end up looking like a football linebacker if I were to sport this style!
Give me a basic v-neck to draw the eye inward from my massive shoulders to my narrow waist, and I'm happy!

Wow, I guess my naturally wide shoulders are going to be "in" this season - how convenient.

I much prefer shoulders exaggerated by scalloped edges to shoulders made stronger by shoulder pads! But I definitely like the detail better used on the shorts. These images almost have a baby-doll style feel to me, which I think is precious.

my mom is gonna love this... she always put shoulder pads in all of my blouses when i was going to school. even now she tells me how much better my outfits would look with those things (ugh, No!). i am 5 feet tall and my weight is around 100 pounds, so you get the picture.
